Summary:Lerch (born March 10, 1886 in Easton, PA) graduated from Lafayette College in 1907 with a degree in electrical engineering and worked as an engineer at several companies in New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania. Two of the notebooks contain class notes for English and Hygiene which were required courses for freshman year in the Electrical Engineering department, Lafayette College. Hygiene was taught first semester which included lectures on the essentials of good health with an emphasis on anatomy and physiology. First semester English focused on the study of words and second term covered the literature of different time periods in Europe. The third notebook contains Lerch's detailed description of a trip taken with his former classmate, Harvey C. Updegrove, Class of 1907, to visit the Panama-Pacific International Exposition, a world's fair held in San Francisco, California in 1915 celebrating the completion of the Panama Canal.
