Description
Summary:Photograph album compiled by British Major General Richard Bannatine-Allason on a round the world trip spanning 1905 to 1909, from his time as a military observer in Manchuria during the Russo-Japanese War. The album contains many images of the Japanese 1st Army in Kin-Ka-Ko under the leadership of General Kuroki Tamemoto. There are several images of Kuroki with foreign military attachés dating from June 1905. Candid photos and portraits show the 1st Army around their barracks and include interiors of the quarters and of the grounds. Of interest are multiple images of Kuroki's Chief of Staff Major General Fujii Shigeta, and a photograph of John J. Pershing (Pershing served as the American military attaché attached to Kuroki's 1st Army in Manchuria from March to September). Featured are numerous photos of the horses used by the army. He photographed the Japanese Mountain Battery 12th Division 1st Army showing artillery in action. While traveling, Allason documented the cultures of the countries he was visiting. During his stay in Manchuria, he photographed temples, local homes, the Imperial Palace, memorials and grave sites. Allason also included portraits of uniformed Russians soldiers of different ranks. He also photographed British attachés and expats with whom he had stayed during his trip including the British consul and his wife. While in Tokyo, he was able to photograph Admiral Togo being driven in a procession to the Imperial Palace. Photographs from Saigon harbor show ships including a French troop ship and Russian cruisers waiting to go into dock for repairs. Allason departed from India for England in 1906. The album also includes photographs of Canada, South Africa, and England.
