520 |a Samuel Riley Miller (born November 21, 1852 in Montrose, PA) graduated from Lafayette College in 1874 and pursued a career as a civil engineer, working as an assistant engineer at Lehigh Valley Coal Co. and later working for 20 years with Locust Mountain Coal & Iron Co. in Ashland, PA. He died on January 17, 1902 in Saranac Lake, NY. Riley's scrapbook highlights his student days at Lafayette College. Contains programs and memorabilia of the Washington and Franklin Literary Societies and the Junior Oratorical Contest. Also includes Class Day programs from 1870-1875, Commencement programs from 1858, 1861, 1866, 1868, 1870, 1871-3, 1874, and items relating to Sigma Chi and Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternities. Additionally, contains a handwritten letter from W. G. Cattell about the smallpox outbreak in 1871. Other notable artifacts include engravings of academic buildings and residences: Mckeen Hall, College Observatory, Philosophical Hall, Pardee Hall; copy of Easton Express from Oct. 1873 with article written by a student entitled "A view of Lafayette College from the Inside: a Student's Letter."
